Deciduous. Typically grows 10-20' tall with a spreading habit. Features 2-3" long panicles of creamy white, fragrant flowers in late spring followed by clusters of sweet sapphire-blue berries (1/3 long drupes) in fall. Ovate to obovate, finely toothed, dark green leaves (to 3" long). Birds are very attracted to the fruit. Also commonly called Asiatic sweetleaf. It is a superior ornamental tree rarely found in nurseries. Despite its rarity it's not fussy about soil, as long as it's well drained and not bothered by heat, humidity or pests. It's native to China, Japan, the Himalayas,and the warmer bits of Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. As usual, this special tree/shrub will not be found in the popular landscape nurseries!
