Iodine is needed for the normal metabolism of cells. Metabolism is the process of converting food into energy. Humans need iodine for normal thyroid function, and for the production of thyroid hormones. Iodine is an essential element that enables the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones. Three iodine molecules are added to make T3 (triiodothyronine), and four for T4 (thyroxine) -- the two key hormones produced by the thyroid gland, so iodine is essential to the production of these two hormones of the master gland of metabolism. Test for iodine, 3 capsules of RAD iodine are ingested, followed by 24 hr. urine collection. The more deficient a subject is in iodine, more iodine is retained and less is excreted in the urine. Sufficiency is achieved when 90% or more of the ingested amount is excreted in the urine. In most subjects tested, 2-3 capsules of RAD iodine/day were required to achieve whole body sufficiency within 3 months and the body retained approximately 1.5 gm iodine at sufficiency (4,8).
