"The Horrible Dr. Hichcock" has the reputation of being one of the most daring Italian films of the 1960s and deservedly so. And the reason is it's subject matter - necrophilia, one of the screen's last taboos. It's power to upset, to disturb the viewer accounts for its current reputation, but is unflinching look at a sexual perversion make it a film of lasting interest. One which earns its ranks among the greats of Italian horror.
Opening in 1885, Dr. Hichcock (Robert Fleyming) has a successful surgical practice going and a seemingly happy marriage at home. But he hides the secret of his sexual adventures. He likes to drug his wife for some macabre fun in the bedroom. In a grimly black room, Hichcock uses his medical skills to turn his wife into an almost-zombie, a state that arouses his lustful passions. One of these romps gets out of hand when dose of anesthetic proves fatal. His bride convulses violently and dies. A dozen years later, the good doctor returns from a trip to Italy with a new wife, Cynthia (Barbara Steele). Cynthia is soon plagued by strange happenings.
