In contrast to NSAIDS for chronic conditions Boswellia does not inhibit prostaglandin production. Inhibits 5-lipoxygenase, decreasing leukotriene synthesis. Mechanism of action: Animal studies performed in India show that BSE (Boswellia Serrata Extract) decreased polymorphonuclear leukocyte infiltration and migration, decreased antibody synthesis and caused almost total inhibition of classical complement pathway. Recently, BSE has been shown to inhibit 5-lipoxygenase and also human leukocyte elastase and as a result been proposed in the treatment of various inflammatory conditions (1). The mechanism of action is quite distinct from non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) which inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. Several clinical studies confirm the benefits of BSE in supporting healthy joint function and optimizing gastrointestinal and respiratory health.
