The traditional masked ball has perhaps never seemed as grim as in Verdi's personal and political tragedy Un Ballo in Maschera which follows the King of Sweden through the intrigues of the ball and ultimately to his death. This fine recording from Torino in the 1950s leaves listeners feeling their rich inheritance of the Italian opera tradition.
