Mexican Hat is a 1' to 3' tall native perennial distinguished by a tall central cone of disc flowers above drooping yellow, to yellow and burnt orange, ray flowers. The flower resembles a slender tall sombrero. This is principally a plant of the Great Plains that readily naturalizes in suitable habitat and prefers dry to medium soils and full sun sites. For gardens it is best massed in borders, native plant gardens, and wildflower meadows. Mexican Hat is commonly included in restoration and habitat mixes in conservation programs. Native Americans used the plant in analgesic, dermatological, and gastrointestinal herbal remedies.
