While returning home from abroad' Dr. Motilal (Dilip Kumar) is stranded in a village as his plane crashes. Here he meets and falls in love with beautiful Tarana (Madhubala)' who lives with her blind father' Surdas. Their affair invites the anger of Toteram' who is all set to wed her. He hatches a plot to drive the doctor out of the village and in the process defiles Tarana's character. The lovers are separated and the doctor' due to some misunderstanding believes his sweetheart to be dead. He resigns himself to a dejected life and a loveless marriage.
