Pierre-Joseph Redouté was called the Raphael of Flowers. He was born in St. Hubert, Ardennes, Belgium on July 10, 1759. He learned to paint from his father who died in 1776. He had two brothers and two sisters. He married Marie-Marthe Gobert and had two daughters and a son.

He had many royal students and patrons including Marie-Antoinette, Josephine, Adélaïde of Orléans and Marie-Louise. He created works for C. L. L’Heritier, Gérard van Spaendonck, and the Museum of Natural History.

In 1819, his works were exhibited at the Louvre. On January 14, 1825, King Charles X honored Pierre-Joseph as a chevalier de la Légion d’honneur. In 1834, he was name to the Ordre de Léopold of Belgium.

He died in Paris in 1840.
