All our plants are organically grown: Castilleja-Indian Paintbrush is a wildflower that attracts hummingbirds. Each plant has several leafy stems topped with orange-red flower spikes. Does best in gravely soil, and will not transplant once establish. All Paintbrushes plants are semi-parasitic, which means they tap into roots of nearby plants for nutrients.. Can reach up to 16" tall in full sun or partial shade, blooms summer into fall. Note: Seeds are very tiny: mix seeds with dry sand or peat moss for better distribution.... Perennial in zones 4-7. ..............Indian Paintbrush Germination: To break its dormancy, this seed needs to be stratified; mix the seed with moist sand and store it in the refrigerator for 60-90 days before planting. In the spring, plant the seed on the surface of loose soil at the base of a larger plant. Since Indian Paintbrush is hemiparasitic, it needs a "host" plant to aid it in receiving necessary nutrients from the soil. For fall planting, sow untreated seed on the surface of loose soil near other plants, or sow a low-growing native grass along with the Indian Paintbrush seed. Germination may be slow and irregular. Days to Sprout 30-120 Transplanting is not recommended. This plant prefers sandy or average soil, but also adapts well to rather moist soil with good drainage.
