Any thread size of your choice or yarn weight of your choice can be used to work up any of this vintage crochet edging and insertions.
Use crochet hook recommended on yarn labels.

Some of the most commonly used sizes are:
Size 10 cotton thread with a size 8 steel hook = 1.4 mm
Sport weight yarn with a size F hook = 3.75 mm
Worsted weight yarn with a size G or H hook - 4 or 5 mm
