Johnny Tillotson enjoyed his greatest success in the early 1960s, when he registered a flurry of top Ten singles and also proved adaptable enough to score on the pop, country, R&B and even easy listening chart. Inspired, like many of his peers, by seeing Elvis Presley, Johnny had a distinct advantage over many of his rivals, since he was an accomplished songwriter, meaning he was less reliant on outside sources for his repertoire. His biggest hit was Poetry In Motion, which topped the British chart and prompted his record label Cadence to revisit some of his earlier, less successful singles. Thus Johnny Tillotson s Best is something of a mixed bag collection, ranging from his own compositions to his interpretations of such classics as Earth Angel.
