While suffering from a medley of illnesses in the period between 1883 and 1885, Friedrich Nietzsche composed his most mature and enduring work, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, in which the figure who founded the Persian religion of Zoroastrianism functions as the mouthpiece for the author's philosophy and beliefs. Contained within the overarching themes of the book – which include the goodness of struggle and hardship and the cyclical nature of life and history – are both Nietzsche's controversial concept of the Ubermensch or “superman" and Nietzsche's most famous quote: “God is dead."
