Product Review
The first film starring Gabin as Inspector Maigret sets a high bar for the films that followed. Gabin was perfectly suited as the inscrutable detective with a world weary view. And director Jean Delannoy proves to be a master at setting the stage for a moody and intense mystery.
Inspector Maigret is considering retirement when a serial killer who viciously attacks women draws him back in. Maigret is the man who has experienced everything and has a pretty good idea about the rest. The Inspector sets the bait for the murderer and patiently wait for him to take it and be cornered by the superior mind. Annie Giradot plays a lustful creature who has the misfortune to be the wife of a maniac. It all ends up in a desperate pursuit amidst the slums of Paris with France's most famous detective scoring a decided triumph.
"Maigret Sets A Trap" has been called the best adaptation of a Simenon story for the movies and it's very hard to argue with that assessment.
