When Vikings raid the monastery outside of the village of Stronsay, Alice, the monks' blind maidservant, is left behind--locked in her room while the monks try to escape the burning building. Alice has spent the last three years in the brothers' "care," punished in shameful ways for every transgression, but when she's rescued by Sven, one of the Viking plunderers, it seems like things are about to go from bad to worse. He is as determined to claim her body as the monks were, but for different reasons entirely. Letting him take her would prove the monks' accusations that she's sinful--but it also might set her free.
