Product Review
Narrated by actor Richard Chamberlain, this beautiful, atmospheric portrait of the Colorado River as it cuts through Arizona's Grand Canyon may be the best short film ever made on the subject. A multiple award-winner, the 40-minute film is perfect for natural history museums, classrooms, or family entertainment.
Director-photographer Don Briggs made a career of river films in general, and Grand Canyon films in particular, and this may be his best. Highlights include up-close looks at colorful Grand Canyon wildlife, slow-motion whitewater river action, and a sequence on the waves of the Colorado's powerful current that is a revelation. Chamberlain's narration is effective, with many appropriate quotes from Maj. John Wesley Powell's celebrated record of his first descents. The music by the late composer Arnold Black is evocative and sensuous. A fine introduction to or souvenir of a Grand Canyon river trip.
