Ellen, always caring and capable, runs a billiards hall with her beloved Reg. Louise, selfish, cold and ever the social climber, has her eyes set on better things than the backstreets of Bolton and heads for a new life in Australia with her businessman husband. And the third sister, Lily, fair and fragile, having lost her feckless man to war, can barely cope with her two small daughters.

An unhappy compromise is reached and a secret pact is made between the three sisters. The two daughters are separated, one going with Louise to Australia, but their relationship remains a secret: neither knows that she has a sister.

Years later, the three sisters meet again with their daughters now grown up. Each of the sisters’ already uneasy lives are further shattered as the two young women are pitted against each other in the fight for the love of one man with heartbreaking consequences and which tear the families apart.
