This popular clover is used for a winter forage or cover crop and is planted in the late summer. It provides a winter grazing crop and is often used in a mixture of grasses. Crimson Clover is good for hay and is highest in nutrition if it is harvested in the pre-bloom state. As a cover crop, it places nitrogen back into the soil, and it can be tilled under as green manure, improving the texture and nutrients in the soil. The Crimson Clover flower heads are long, crimson red in color and very showy.
