The founding of the Berliner Philharmoniker on the first of May in 1882, is annually celebrated with a concert in an European city of cultural significance. In 2007 the EUROPAKONZERT took place in Berlin. Berlins magnificent Kabelwerk Oberspree has been an icon of industrial might since the late nineteenth century, but on 1 May 2007 it was reinvented to play host to an extraordinary musical event: the 125th birthday celebrations of another renowned institution, the Berlin Philharmonic. With superb acoustics and magnificent architecture, the building proved to be an ideal setting for the annual EUROPAKONZERT featuring performances of Wagner and Brahms music of the same vintage as the orchestra itself under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle. The partnership of Lisa Batiashvili and Truls Mørk ensures a moving performance of Brahms last orchestral work, his Double Concerto, followed by an amazingly fresh and dynamic interpretation of Brahms Fourth Symphony.
