Nutmeg, or Myristica fragrans Houtt, is the dried seed of the fruit of an evergreen. Both mace and nutmeg come from the same fruit with the lacy covering for mace and seeds as nutmeg. Native to Indonesia, this spice is now found in cuisines all over the world. In both sweet and savory preparations, nutmeg adds a warm and peppery quality to a dish. Ground nutmeg can be added to cakes, pies, meat marinades and soups. 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg per 4 cups of liquid in soups and sauces. Use in cookies, cakes, puddings, eggnog, and fruit dishes.
