Best-laid plans oft go astray in The Day They Robbed the Bank of England, a suspenseful and cleverly constructed crime caper starring Aldo Ray, Oscar®-winner Hugh Griffith (Best Supporting Actor: Ben-Hur, 1959) and Peter O’Toole in his first major role. At the turn of the 2oth century, Irish-American mining engineer Charles Norgate (Ray) agrees to help the IRA fund its political activities by robbing the Bank of England. Tunneling in over the weekend, Norgate breaks through from the sewer below, but when dimming lights and an absence of rats raises a bank guard’s (O'Toole) suspicions, it becomes a race against time to steal a million in gold before they can open the vault.
