The light has three modes settings which are accessed via a switch on the rear of the device , in the first mode the lights are on medium as soon as it gets dark so that there is always bright light in dark or low light conditions. The second setting will have the light set to dim during dark conditions but when motion is detected the light turns to full brightness,or finally and the mode I always tend to use, is where the light remains off except when motion is detected and then it will turn on for 17-20 seconds at full brightness..
