Based on a true story, this made-for-TV movie focuses on seventeen-year-old Richie Werner (Robby Benson). Richie has a tumultuous relationship with his stern father, George (Ben Gazzara) and their conflict only worsens as Richie begins to buckle under the pressures of school and family. The teenager turns to drugs to escape his demons but when George becomes increasingly frustrated and informs the police of his son's criminal activities, tragedy ensues.
The Death of Richie first premiered on television in 1977 and made an immediate impact on audiences. It garnered critical acclaim for its powerful look at family troubles. Benson and Gazzara both received accolades for their emotional performances and the film has taken on a cult following in recent years.
