The Ninth is a world treasure, and was played by the student protesters in Tienanmen Square in 1989, rewritten for our time by the British punk/folk singer Billy Bragg, provided solace to those struggling for freedom in Pinochet's Chile, and continues to fill seats in symphony halls and karaoke bars from London to Tokyo and Cape Town. Each December 5000 Japanese choristers take to the stage to sing the "Ode To Joy" of the final movement, an unbelievable sight.
