As the growing Republic fights for independence against Britain, family matriarch Juno Boyle (Sara Allgood) struggles to keep her alcoholic husband and politically radical son safe during the turbulent revolution. But life in their Dublin tenement is not easy, and a series of tragic events will irrevocably change the family forever.

Based on the successful play by Sean O’Casey, this film marks Hitchcock’s second talkie and addresses surprisingly heartfelt, domestic themes for the suspense director. Allgood, who received great praise for her heart-wrenching performance as Juno, and several other cast members reprise the roles they played in the acclaimed stage production.
