Mannitol is a white, crystalline sugar alcohol with the chemical formula (C6H8(OH)6) that is used as sugar substitute and laxative. Mannitol is a polyol (sugar alcohol) widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries because of its unique functional properties. It is about half as sweet as table sugar (sucrose) and has a desirable cooling effect often used to mask bitter tastes therefore used as a low calorie sweetener in cooking.
