Laser printing requires two main components: the toner which carries the "ink" to print and the imaging drum which is responsible for transferring or imprinting the toner onto the paper. The technical term for the drum is the organic photoconductor. In most laser toner cartridges, the drum and toner comes as one unit. Brother printer cartridges differ from most laser toners because the toner and drum are separate units. This is why if you have a Brother printer, you need to purchase both toner AND drum. Fortunately, the drum has a longer print capacity than the toner powder so you do not always have to buy a new drum each time you run out of toner. However, drums are essential in keeping excellent quality of prints.
