It is very common for men over 50 to struggle with symptoms of an enlarged prostate. A small amount of prostate enlargement is present in many men over age 40, but by age 50 about half of all men have begun to develop an enlarged prostate. It is found in more than 90 percent of men over age 80. The prostate is a walnut-sized gland found just below the bladder, surrounding part of the urethra, the canal that empties the bladder. When the prostate becomes enlarged, which commonly occurs for many men as they age, it may put pressure on the urethra and either interfere with urination or cause the need to frequently urinate.
