For the soundtrack of this dark and profound film about American Civil War, John Ford called on David Buttolph, a master of this genre. His martial and upbeat catchy score drives the film into a kind of horse movie in which we see the life of riding horse soldiers, with their anxiety, their weakness, and their heroism. One of he most beautiful scores of a John Ford picture. The famous song I Left My Love, featured in the film, was composed by undisputed genius of Western Country Music Stan Jones.
