How to Grow a Passion Flower From Seed

Passion Flowers are flowering vines that are native to South America. According to the University of Maryland Medical
Center, the passion flower is an herb used to treat anxiety, often in combination with other herbs. It's
name is derived from its resemblance to the crown of thorns worn by Christ on the day of his cruxifiction. As an
ornamental plant, the vine is magnificent, climbing up to 30 feet or more and blooming profusely with highly
scented purple flowers.

Instructions
1.Gather seeds as soon as they are ripe and prepare to plant them right away. In nature, the vines drop their seeds
and germinate very shortly thereafter. However, seeds that have been stored often take up to 12 months
to germinate, if they germinate at all.

2.Lightly sand the sides of the seed to break down the hard shell. Place in a bowl of warm water and soak overnight.

3.Plant 1/8 to ? inch deep in a potting mixture of equal parts peat moss and all-purpose potting soil. Firm down lightly
and then water to moisten the soil.

4.Place in a warm location where temperatures range from 80 to 85 degrees F during the day and remain above 68
degrree F at night.

5.Keep the soil evenly moist until seeds germinate in 2 to 4 weeks.

6.Place seedlings in full sun and fertilize with a 2:1:3 fertilizer once a month for optimum growth. Water frequently,
but do not allow soil to become soggy. Passion flower needs well drained soil to avoid root rot.
