Overview:
Gourmet Living's Mediterranean Sea Salt trio provides you with three colorful finishing salts from Cyprus to accentuate the flavors in your dishes. Choose from our popular large white flakes, black sea salt crystals or our lemon infused salt which really pops on fish dishes.

Harvesting Natural Salt from the Sea:
Natural sea salts are harvested from salt beds where sea water is "collected" in a series of connected salt beds. The water in these salt beds eventually evaporates leaving behind natural salt crystals which are then harvested.

Impurities are then removed from the salt and after the salt crystals are completely dry, they are then shipped in bulk to be bottled or packaged by wholesalers.

Sea Salt and Nutrition:
In general, most nutritionists and the medical profession recommend decreasing salt intake - certainly as one grows older. What they don't tell you is that the average American consumes roughly 70% of their daily salt consumption in the form of processed foods. Sodium content of salts vary significantly, so do consult bottle or packaging labels. For the most part, sea salts contain twice the sodium of "cooking" salts, so a little bit goes a long way.

Using Sea Salt in Cooking:
Given its versatility, natural sea salts tend to enhance the flavors of most food. Sea salt is generally used as a "finishing salt" and provides a bit of color and taste to under-seasoned foods. Finishing salts are often added to soups, fish, eggs, vegetables and casseroles.
