When you eat sugary foods and carbohydrates the food adheres to your teeth, providing the perfect environment for bacteria to feed and multiply. So what does this mean? As the bacteria consume the food, they in turn produce acids that break down the enamel of your teeth, and volatile sulfur compounds which cause bad breath. Many commercial mouthwashes combat this by using alcohol, an antiseptic, to kill the bacteria.
