Problems of Neurosis: A book of case-histories is one of the main books written by Alfred Adler. In collaboration with Sigmund Freud and a small group of Freud's colleagues, Adler was among the co-founders of the psychoanalytic movement and a core member of the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society: indeed, to Freud he was "the only personality there" .

Only those who see the now as the very knife-edge separating the future from the past are aware of things as they really are. That is why, in the philosophy of medicine, true diagnosis—in Galen's phrase, “the thorough understanding of things present”—comprehends and implies the right understanding of etiology (or what has been) and of prognosis (or what will be). But academies, whether of art, of literature, or of science, vainly attempt to fix, to crystallize, not merely that which flows, but that which is of the very essence of being—the flux, or change itself. And academies of medicine form no exception to the rule.
