- Purple Orchid Tree is a fast growing tropical that grows to 35 feet in height and 35 feet wide. The slender trunks of the Orchid Tree are topped with arching branches and are clothed in large, two-lobed (Butterfly shaped) light green leaves, 2 to 4 inches long. It is deciduous and is known to be evergreen in warmer climates. Orchid Tree blooms in the fall, before the leaves drop, with many showy, long lasting and delightfully fragrant, orchid like flowers. Flowers are five inches wide with purple, pink and lavender petals, creating a vivid splash of color in the autumn landscape. This spectacular flower display makes the Orchid Tree a favorite for specimen plantings. The flowers are followed by slender, brown, flat seedpods, 6 to 12 inches long, which usually persist on the tree throughout the winter.
