Freshwater Cultured Pearls All pearls begin as sand on the skin of an oyster, and grow in layers of calcium to round or baroque shapes. While many pearls grow naturally, the large demand for pearls outpaces natural growth, and pearls can be cultured by hosting farms of oysters and inserting grains of sand into their shells.
