Baseball becomes a whole other game once there are base-runners. As soon as the ball is hit, especially past the infielders and into the outfield, everything speeds up for the defense. A well-prepared team, however, is trained and conditioned to focus on the priority runner, which as a rule is the one who presents the best opportunity to make a play on and at the base of highest value. Effectiveness of the defense at this point depends on its ability to execute the relay and cut-off plays.
