When I was a little girl growing up motorcycles were rarely seen in our small community. Often, just the sight of one stopped us in our tracks as we took in every moment of that brief encounter. I remember the thought of freedom and exhilaration that the lucky rider must have been experiencing. But with my shy and timid nature, I could never have imagined me in that reality. Besides, motorcycles were seen as big, bad and loud to many people and unfortunately, many linked a similar stigma to their riders in those early days. Surely, no well respecting girl would ever dream of contradicting that perception and those few that bravely did pave the way were often perceived as “a reckless soul with wild abandon”…whatever that meant. Suffice it to say that it was frowned upon by our small community.
Over the years that memory of exhilaration and freedom that made an impression on me at such an early age continued bubbling to the surface from time to time but it was a dream I thought would never be fulfilled. But it’s amazing how time matures us as the years pass. What might have seemed impossible to a young girl back then could in fact become a reality sometime in the future.
