A wood screw is a thread forming screw with sharp thread at a coarse pitch. It is used for directly fastening two wood surfaces. Wood screws have a smooth shank that allows the screw to pull the two pieces of wood together for a tight joint to prevent the wood from pulling or splitting. Pre-drilling is suggested since brass is softer that steel screws. It will also help avoid splitting of the wood.
