Notes:
Leaf and loose-head type lettuces are much easier to grow (and many times more nutritious) than the standard, tightly wrapped "cabbage" or "iceberg" type you typically find in the grocery store. - 100 grams of lettuce has 10 calories. - Cool weather crop, sow in early spring or fall. - Giving your lettuce plants partial shade will help them to develop bigger heads and prevent the adverse effects of letting the plants go dry on a hot day. - Pick your lettuce early in the morning for crispier leaves that last longer. - Cut your leaves, don't pull up the plant - new leaves will grow to replace the cut ones.
Instructions:
Direct sow by turning up and loosening the first 6-8 inches of soil, this will help the lettuce get a better foothold and establish itself more quickly. Water well. Thin (or transplant) plants to 8 inches apart when second set of leaves appears.
Thinned plants may be eaten as baby greens.
