Vince Tanzi returns to his native Vermont to check in with the surgeon who once removed a bullet from his head. She tells him that he’s fine now, but he knows otherwise. He’s not the hard-charging P.I. that he used to be, and he’s not even sure that he should be taking on new cases. Maybe he should collect his pension, look after his toddler son, and enjoy a quiet life in his adopted state of Florida.

But trouble has a way of finding Tanzi. A college girl has disappeared—the granddaughter of his mother’s best friend—and Vince offers to help find her. His pursuit takes him through quaint Vermont villages, mountain lookouts, a campus rocked by a brutal murder, and a religious retreat gone awry. And then, more people start dying…

The fourth adventure in the Tanzi series finds Vince diminished, but as tenacious as ever. Slow and steady wins the race—unless it’s a race to his own grave.
