This is a solid piece of D-2 steel. D-2 is a high-carbon tool steel, capable of holding a sharp edge for a long period of time. It is also much more resistant to corrosion than 1095. D-2 is called "semi-stainless", because it offers more stainless properties than high carbon steels, but it is also much tougher than stainless steels. D-2 has high wear-resistance and abrasion-resistance properties. This billet is serious blade-making material that will work well for hunting and fishing. It can be easily sharpened at home or in the field, and will hold an edge very well. This billet arrives in an annealed (softened) state. It has not yet been heat treated so it is easier to cut. Heat treatment is required so that your final knife will hold a long lasting, sharp edge.
