Millennium Asparagus won "Seed of the Year" in 2005 at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. With the advantages it's no surprise why! Developed by Professor David Wolyn of the University of Guelph in Canada, Millennium Asparagus out-yields nearly all Asparagus varieties. Its excellent flavor is matched with its tight tipped, uniform spears that allow for harvesting taller spears = more lbs per harvest! It is naturally high in "Rutin" a natural bioflavonoid that is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties. It tolerates cooler springs & cold winters, resulting in less winter kill than most US hybrid varieties. As a Late season asparagus crop, it is a top performer, even in hotter temperatures. Unlike most asparagus varieties that only grow well in sandy loam, Millennium will grow in all soil types...Even Clay! Grows in zones 3-8 & is Rust-resistant. Coming from 1st generation seed these crowns are virtually all Male. Male Asparagus produce far more spears than females. While many sellers claim their varieties are "all male" many aren't. To get all male asparagus seeds, plants must grow in a fully screened field to keep pollinators out. If asparagus grown for seed is in an open field, pollinators can pollinate many of the blooms resulting in female seeds. Due to the cost of growing male seed, very few farmers are able to grow male asparagus seed (which grow into crowns). 1st generation Millennium seed is only grown on a 5 acre fully screened plot of land in Canada. Crowns have been recently harvested from the fields, are plump & full of vitality, unlike the shriveled up crowns at most "Big Box" stores. A well cared for asparagus patch can easily produce a harvest for 15-25 years, so investing in a high quality variety like Millennium is a wise investment. Crowns are grown in the Pacific Northwest, which results in a much larger crowns than what can be grown in the mid-west or east coast in the same amount of time.
