Macy Lou Carr is seventy-two years old and has spent a lifetime caring for her mentally ill husband, Marvin. Lately, her patience with him is wearing thin. She begins to wonder why she remained with a man who was unable or unwilling to love and care for her in return. When Dennis Marlowe rents the home next door for the summer, he soon becomes aware of Macy Lou’s plight. An unlikely friendship develops between Macy Lou and the younger man. Dennis is drawn to the older couple, and soon learns he may have more in common with them than he could have ever imagined.
