Braided backing is this most common choice for fly fishing rigs.
This backing works great for up to 8wt. lines, and will handle a fish peeling off drag with the best of them!
Braided nylon passes through guides very easily...it's slick to help pass through guides, but not overly so - knots tie really well and are solid.
