(Cerastium biebersteinii) A.k.a. Bering Chickweed, Boreal Chickweed, Mouse-Eared Chickweed. Produces a low mat of grayish green, wooly foliage and a carpet of small, five-petaled white flowers. This native plant originated in the high altitudes of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula. Its silvery, felted foliage and low-growing, spreading habit make this an attractive and hardy ground cover. Widely adapted, will tolerate cold climates as well as desert heat (in light shade), does not thrive in Deep South regions which are both hot and humid. With good drainage, poor soil is easily accepted. Needs little water once established, will spread rapidly (and could become invasive) in moist soils. Forms low growing, dense silvery-gray carpets to 6 inches tall and 2-3 feet across. *** HOW TO GROW: DO NOT COVER but press into soil! This plant thrives in poor or rocky soil, and prefers well drained to dry conditions; it tolerates heat, but prefers moderate temperatures. When grown in partial shade, the plant grows slightly taller with fewer blossoms and less silvery foliage. *** **SOIL Temperature for Germination: 70F **Plant Spacing: 12-18 inches. **Hardiness: Zones 3-11. **Sun Requirement: Full Sun. **Days to Germination: 15-25 days. **Germination Rate: 96%.
