Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic acid, the principal natural form of Vitamin C) is one of a few topical agents, that has been scientifically proven to improve skin complexion. Ascorbic Acid is considered a gold standard, although other forms (rather derivatives) of Vitamin C, such as Ascorbyl Palmitate, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, etc. are available and have been shown to possess some of the qualities of Ascorbic Acid. In order to achieve a desired effect, the concentration of Vitamin C solution has to be between 10 and 20%. Vitamin C improves skin complexion by a number of mechanisms. It reduces environmental oxidative stress by reducing free radicals skin damage. It stimulates synthesis of collagen by skin cells fibroblasts. It also reduces skin pigmentation by inhibiting melanin production. It has also been demonstrated that efficacy and stability of Vitamin C can be enhanced by combining it with other antioxidants, such as Vitamin E (Alpha-D-tocopherol), Ferulic Acid, Astaxanthin and Phloretin. Vitamin E is an oil soluble antioxidant. When it is combined with Vitamin C, they act synergistically by regenerating each other and potentiating the effects of each other. Ferulic acid is a naturally occurring compound found primarily in plant cell walls. It is a potent antioxidant on its own. Moreover, research indicates that the addition of ferulic acid to the combination of vitamins C and E could increase protection from UV-induced skin damage. Astaxanthin is a carotenoid with a chemical structure similar to Vitamin A. Due to its unique chemical structure, astaxanthin is a very effective antioxidant. Furthermore, astaxanthin has also been found to increase the antioxidant effects of vitamin E and C. Finally, Phloretin is another antioxidant, which belongs to a group of flavonoids. It helps to repair free radical cell damage, restores skin elasticity and produces skin lightening. All these ingredients are present in Dermafusion Vitamin C Serum
