The Atkins Diet is a low-carb and high-protein diet created (and popularized) by Dr. Robert Atkins in 1972, hence the name. The diet is based on his theory on insulin as source of stimulating carbohydrate production which may result to weight gain, overeating, or hunger pangs. The Atkins diet was initially disapproved by health authorities due to claims that it promotes foods with high saturated fat content. However, Atkins debunked these claims through his best-selling books.
How Does It Work?
You’ll go through four phases of the Atkins diet, starting with minimal carb intake up to eating more progressively until you get satisfactory results in your weight loss. Maintaining carbs on a regular basis isn’t as easy as depriving your sugar intake. Here, you need to keep your food list manageable. In the first phase for example, if you’re allowed to consume 25 grams of net carbs, 13 or 14 of them should be comprised of vegetables (which are a good source of fiber).
