Motivation, essentially is that which initiates and maintains goal-driven mannerisms. It is an unseen force. Biological, cognitive, and social effects alter motivation; these forces mold it, forming it into something that either promotes growth or results in stagnation.
Biological effects on motivation involve various mechanisms required at a very physical level. As aforementioned, one has kitchen appliances that rev and whir to maintain a very basic biological motive: to boost one’s caloric intake for further survival. One reaches for a glass of Coca-Cola, for example, out of motivation to quench one’s thirst. These motives are incredibly basic and biological; most animals and plants of the earth have similar biological motivations as well. A human simply has refined his reach to maintain these motivations.
Cognitive effects of motivation are incredibly complex. Hormonal imbalances, the things one eats and the things by which one is surrounded can affect the brain, thus altering one’s motivational output. Depression, stress, and low self-esteem accumulate at this cognitive level and impair judgment, thus altering continued rev for motivation.
