Grow a garden filled with Dipper Gourds, from freshly harvested Lagenaria siceraria seeds. Dipper Gourds are popularly used as a ladle or a large spoon. The fruits turn from green to brown as they dry, and can be carved after they solidify. Each gourd vine will grow to a length of about 6 to 12 feet long and are best grown vertically, by the use of a trellis or support. This prevents mold and mildew and also allows for better oxygen flow. Gourd plants are categorized as annuals, meaning that they will grow quickly within a single growing season, only to produce their fruits and later wilt with the cooler temperautures of the Autumn season. Seeds can be collected from your Dipper Gourds if the fruits are left on the vine until they are dry.

  • Appearance: Dipper gourds, Lagenaria siceraria, are known for their elongated shapes with a bulbous base and a slender neck, resembling a dipper or ladle when dried and cut.
  • Growth: They grow on vigorous vines that can sprawl or climb, requiring trellises or substantial space. The gourds mature in about 120 days, turning from green to a tan or pale brown when ready to harvest.
  • Cultivation: Preferring warm climates, dipper gourds thrive in full sun with well-drained soil. They need consistent watering but are sensitive to overwatering, which can lead to rot.
  • Harvesting for Use: Once mature, the gourds are harvested, left to dry for several months, then cleaned, and the top of the "handle" is cut off to create a scoop or container.
  • Quality: All seeds packaged by Seed Needs are intended for the current and the following growing seasons. All seeds are stored in a temperature controlled facility that is free of significant amounts of moisture.
  • Quantity: Seed Needs offers generous quantities. You can share with friends and family, or you can save the extra seeds until the following season, if properly stored.
  • Packets: Each seed packet displays an artful illustration of the variety to be grown, as well as detailed seed sowing information on the reverse side. They measure 3.25" wide by 4.50" tall.
