Product Review
This re-invented Go board marries the traditional wooden goban with a soft, no-slip mouse pad material. The realistic wood design is a replica of the unique and rare grain of the kaya tree, or Japanese nutmeg-yew, and the quality and style is undeniable. Proudly Made in the USA, this full-sized board measures 20 x 20 inches and is .07 inch thick but can be folded or rolled-up without keeping a crease making it ideal for travel. A Go enthusiast's best friend, the soft surface always lies flat, nicely holds the stones (goishi) in place, and the non-slip grippy underside of the mousepad keeps the board from sliding around. The coordinates are labeled alphanumerically according to standard Go format so both players see the same coordinates. This is a standard GO board showing 361 points of intersection with 324 squares made by 19 horizontal and 19 vertical lines. There are Star Points shown on certain intersections for the sole purpose of direction. For reasons of perspective, the correct grid setup is in the form of a rectangle instead of a square. The long side stretches between the players, with the short side facing each player. From the player's perspective, the angle will make the grid appear square. . The objective of the game is to dominate and control territory while capturing your opponent's pieces. The shifting balance of territory and power can unnerve even the most disciplined and intellectual player. The board arrives folded and may have creases upon arrival. These creases will relax within a few days if left out on a flat surface. May require a heavy book to accelerate the flattening process. Once the creases come out from original manufacturer's packaging, the board will lie flat without creases.
