It didn't take long for North Carolina basketball head coach Roy Williams to put an exclamation point on the university's win against the Gonzaga Bulldogs in the NCAA national championship basketball game played at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona, April 3, 2017.
After the Tar Heels outlasted a scrappy (37-2) Gonzaga team, 71 to 65, Williams told a jubilant post-game locker room, “North Carolina basketball is going to be you for the rest of your life."
With the victory, North Carolina (33- 7) won its sixth national title and head coach Roy Williams won his third championship, surpassing his mentor Dean Smith.
The Tar Heels became just the fourth team to come back from losing the national championship the year before to win it the following year.
Joel Berry II recovered from ankle injuries to lead the Tar Heels with 22 points.
The Zags reached the championship game with the best team in Coach Mark Few's 18 seasons, a mix of established players, talented transfers and a solid recruiting class.
Perhaps the most impressive - and decisive - play of the evening came with 16 seconds left.
With North Carolina clinging to a three-point lead, Kennedy Meeks blocked an attempted shot by Nigel Williams-Goss, Gonzaga's leading scorer this season. The block led to a run-out dunk by Justin Jackson and gave North Carolina a five-point lead.
Twelve seconds later time expired and the Tar Heels were crowned National Champions.
